Crunchyroll Party announced this morning that their new Switch app will provide viewers with complete access to tens of thousands of anime episodes. Crunchyroll has been available on competing consoles, smart TVs, and other streaming-capable devices for a long time. In comparison to Microsoft and Sony’s consoles, the Switch is known for its lack of streaming apps and non-gaming entertainment alternatives.
Crunchyroll’s Unreal Engine-powered app joins Funimation, another anime streaming service available on the Switch since late 2020. Crunchyroll hopes to set itself apart by being the first streaming app to support offline viewing on the Nintendo Switch. Those without a subscription can still watch episodes with advertising, even though the company offers a subscription option that removes ads and allows viewers to see episodes when they air in Japan.
Even with Crunchyroll, the Switch’s selection of streaming and entertainment apps pales in comparison to the Xbox and PlayStation. Prior to the launch of Crunchyroll, Switch owners had only five options for video streaming: Funimation, Hulu, Twitch, YouTube, and Pokémon TV, which broadcasts episodes of the Pokémon anime. Users who use the Switch as their primary entertainment device are unable to access Netflix, YouTube TV, Peacock, HBO, and a number of other popular streaming services.
While Crunchyroll’s addition gives some optimism for the future of non-gaming entertainment on the Switch, Nintendo has a history of prioritising games over all else, so don’t expect the device to become a go-to streaming platform overnight. Unless they’re anime fans, most Switch owners are better off watching movies and TV on a different console or on a device like a Roku or Chromecast.
