How Do You Drain & Clean a Henny Penny Fryer?

Henny Penny Open Fryers

We’re glad you asked! But first, perhaps you should know what a Henny Penny open fryer is. It’s a type of commercial fryer made by the company known as Henny Penny Corporation from Eaton, Ohio. Their fryers are used in many restaurants and fast-food establishments throughout the world. The company has been around since 1957. They have earned a great reputation for manufacturing reliable and high-quality deep fryers and other products such as breading machines, oil filtering systems, etc.

You’ve heard of “Oil in the Hen House”,—but what about “Oil in the Fryer?”

The Henny Penny open fryers have been used by restaurants to make crispy, juicy french fries and other fried foods for decades. However, some good things can get old, and when you’re dealing with a piece of equipment that’s used as frequently as a fryer, this happens more quickly than you might like.

So How Do You Keep Your Fryer Clean?

Does it need to be drained? How long does it take? And when is it time to replace your fryer altogether? It’s not as complicated as it seems. Here is what you need to know about cleaning and draining your Henny Penny Fryer.

How Do You Drain and Clean a Henny Penny Fryer?

1) Remove basket and fryer cover.

2) Open the drain valve.

3) Remove the filter.

4) Turn off the fryer and unplug it from the wall. Wait for the oil to cool down before handling.

5) Remove the tank from the unit. Unscrew and remove the drain plug completely, and put it somewhere safe; you’re going to need it later! If your drain is equipped with a spring, pull out both ends of the spring until they disengage from their slots, then lift them away from your tank. Place these pieces somewhere safe as well; you’ll need them later!

6) Drain oil from the tank into a container with a lid. (This is where you’ll store your used oil for recycling.) Remove the cover that is on the top of the fryer and place it aside so you can access the drain valve, which is located at the lower base of the unit under a small panel in front of your fryer tank (usually marked with a red arrow).

7) Clean tank, basket, and fryer cover with hot water and detergent, then rinse with hot water.

8) Return the tank to a unit, then replace the lid and turn the machine back on to preheat it to frying temperature.

9) Put on gloves, goggles and an apron if necessary.

Regular Tips

We’re here to help with some extra regular tips. Keep reading to learn how to drain and clean your Henny Penny fryer like a pro, so you don’t have to clean it once a year—make some hard efforts if you use these tips and tricks once a week or maybe twice a week. Henny Penny fryers are the best, but they aren’t the easiest – We’ve got a couple of tricks and tips to get you through your next cleaning and draining session.

-Make sure to keep the lid of your fryer open when not in use—that way, you won’t be caught off-guard by unexpected grease fires. Check the oil level before each use. Make sure the oil is still covering the heating elements in the basket, and if not, add more oil until it does. If you add too much oil, that’s okay—just drain some out using the drain spout on the side of your fryer. When adding oil to your fryer, make sure it’s not too hot—adding cold or lukewarm oil will prevent excess foaming and boiling over.

-If needed, use a stiff nylon brush to remove loose debris from the inside of your fryer. After brushing away as much debris as possible, wipe it down with a damp cloth before draining and cleaning.

-When you drain the fryer, you must pull all of the cruds out of the metal strainer. If you don’t, you will have to start over again!

-When cleaning the fryer, don’t forget to clean your hood filter! It gets really disgusting if you don’t do it regularly.
