How does a vehicle tracking system monitor the temperature of a vehicle?

Many of our critical supplies are delivered in refrigerated trucks. From food that must be kept at a specific temperature to remain safe for consumption to medicines like the COVID-19 vaccine, maintaining a constant temperature is critical to its ability to function.

Transport providers must guarantee and be able to prove to the customer that foods or medicines were kept at the proper temperature. FLEET-EYE Vehicle Safety Systems can be beneficial. Our temperature monitoring alerts, which use the same technology that enables vehicle tracking, keep you informed of temperature changes that could seriously affect goods and products.

How does temperature monitoring in vehicles work?

Temperature probes mounted on the chiller units of climate-controlled vehicles are typically used by vehicle tracking systems that offer temperature monitoring. These probes are linked to the vehicle tracking system and monitor conditions continuously, taking readings at regular intervals. When the vehicle is in use, the FLEET-EYE vehicle safety systems reports temperatures every two minutes, and every 15 minutes when it is not. The temperature is recorded whenever the ignition is turned off.

Temperature readings are sent from the probes to the vehicle tracking device, which sends the data to the electric vehicle tracker system via GPRS, along with other readings such as speed, acceleration and braking patterns, and location information. This data is accessible in the FLEET-EYE electric vehicle tracker via a temperature monitoring report or at a glance on the live tracking screen.

If a temperature probe registers consecutive readings that are outside of the specified range, you will be notified so that you can investigate and resolve the issue before any goods are damaged. This level of control can mean the difference between a good delivery and a ruined shipment for fleets with climate-controlled vehicles.

Coordinating the distribution of high-quality food

Reynolds Catering Supplies, a leading fresh food supplier to the UK food service industry, places a premium on logistics and distribution. Reynolds consistently invests in its fleet and operational efficiency to maintain its competitive edge. Reynolds’ success has been aided by the capabilities of FLEET-EYE vehicle safety systems, a critical tool used by the company since 2011.

“We looked for ease of use, the best price point, and wide-ranging capabilities,” explains Reynolds’ Head of Fleet Support, Steve White. “From an operational standpoint, live tracking has enabled us to manage delivery schedules and the effective re-routing of drivers.”

FLEET-EYE electric vehicle tracker easily accommodated Reynolds’ need to monitor the temperatures of their climate-controlled vehicles. Two probes per vehicle alert Reynolds to temperature variations of just 0.5° C outside of a predefined range, triggering an email to alert staff of potential product loss. Prior to the implementation of this technology, drivers performed checks manually, which was time-consuming and prone to error.

“The FLEET-EYE vehicle safety systems provides us with a full chill-chain audit, allowing us to verify the status of the load at any time,” Steve explains. This has reduced waste, improved customer service, and assists in documenting compliance with Food Safety and Hygiene Regulations.”

Maintaining regulatory compliance

National Veterinary Services Ltd (NVSL), the UK’s largest veterinary wholesaler, supplies veterinary surgeons with a wide range of goods, including temperature-controlled items such as medicines, vaccines, and animal foodstuffs.

NVSL was looking for a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective way to monitor the temperatures in their fleet of over 150 vehicles in real-time to ensure regulatory compliance and deliver top-quality products to their customers on a next-day service. They didn’t have to look far because they were long-time FLEET-EYE Electric Vehicle Tracker customers.
