How To Cook Dry Fish?

If you buy a pack of dry fish online, it may seem challenging to understand how to incorporate them into your recipes. While dried fish is famous in Asian and Filipino dishes, you may get flustered about how to use them. Luckily, preparing dried fish is easy and takes only a few minutes to turn into a delicious meal or snack. Make sure to soak the fish beforehand to keep them moist and tender.

Let us check the step-by-step process to cook them:

Soaking the fish

For this, cut off the fins with the kitchen scissors. This is because the finds are unappetising. You would want to take them off before cooking. They are generally found at the top and bottom of the fish and trim those off close to the body. There are fins on the side of the fish body, so keep cutting those. You need not remove the head and bones before cooking the fish. Now, submerge the fish inside for 30 minutes to tender the meat.

Fill the bowl with enough water to cover the fish completely. Place all the dried fish inside. The water will moisten and rinse the excess salt used to dry the fish. If you are short on time or working with smaller fishes, soak them for two minutes in hot water. Remove the fish out of the bowl and hold them under cool running water to remove the debris on the surface. Gently remove the fish skin to work out the dirt stuck under the scales.

You can either dry the fish individually or place the pieces on the plate lined covered with a paper towel.

Pan-friend dry fish

This is a standard recipe made with dry fish online. To prepare this, add some vegetable oil to a large pan. Go for a pan with a thick bottom as they are less likely to burn the fish. Place dried fish on each side of the pan and continue adding more pieces. Let the first side cook for five minutes or until the skin turns golden brown. If there is not enough room, cook them in batches.

Flip the fish to cook them on the other side until the scales turn crisp. Transfer them to a plate covered with paper towels to drain the excess oil.

Place your oven racks in the centre position so that heat moves around evenly. Set it to 400 degrees and let them heat while prepping other items. Wait until it reaches the proper cooking temperature. Arrange the fish in a single layer on an aluminium foil. If the single layer is insufficient, use multiple foil sheets. Use cooking spray so that the fish does not stick to the foil. If not that, use vegetable oil.

Use another foil sheet to wrap the fish loosely. This prevents a strong odour while cooking. Cook them later in the oven for at least 10 minutes. Serve and relish them while they are hot.
