Lovely homes for you and your pet

If you have a pet, you know how much space they need to relax, play, or simply walk around. Their items need a designated place and they need an almost child-proof environment. If you are thinking of getting a pet or you have a pet, there are a few things you should keep in mind while decorating your house. Here are some things to remember and some products to think about. If you are having a hard time making a budget for your redecoration, you can always use a painting cost calculator to determine the total cost.

Products to use when you have a pet

    1. Non-toxic paints – Check the effects of the paint and see if it’s non-toxic. If you think painting is the only time that paints are toxic, then think again. Pets have a tendency to scratch walls or corners for comfort. When this happens, small flakes may come off and they may ingest them or inhale them.
  • Low VOC paint – Volatile Organic Compounds are responsible for the smell of paint and have fumes that can cause even humans to sneeze. Instead of that, choose a low VOC paint and ensure you and your pet remain safe at all times.
  • Water-based paints – The advantage of water-based paints is that you don’t need a solvent. A solvent has a strong smell that can be an irritant to your pets and you.
  • Floor guard – Use Apex floor guard and ensure your floor is in proper shape at all times. This is a great option for the outdoors and allows you to enjoy some sun without you and your pet getting dirty. This acrylic emulsion comes with exceptional durability. This floor guard is a must when you have a dog. They protect your floor against their constant action of digging.
  • Oil-based paints – These are much more durable than normal paints. They are the perfect choice for doors, window sills, window panels, and so on. They are water-proof and work well on walls that need to be constantly cleaned. The drawback of these paints is that they are high in VOC. If you are looking to paint with these, the ideal situation is to relocate with your pet and shift back only when the fumes have dissipated.

These are great for when you are even thinking of bringing a pet home. Unfortunately, it is impossible to know whether a particular paint is pet-friendly or not as the products are not marked accordingly. However, there is an easy way to determine this.

Things to avoid when painting your house with a pet

When you are considering your options, check the composition of the paint and look for these. If you see these ingredients, you may wish to avoid the paints completely –

  1. Polyurethane
  2. Formaldehyde
  3. Ammonia
  4. Acetone
  5. Fungicides
  6. Biocides

These can be harmful to your pet and fatal in large quantities. If you are unsure of any of the ingredients, then it is best to look them up on the internet and understand whether they are harmful.

Additives and fortifications to avoid

There are many paints that boast of their ability to keep away pests, fungus, mold, and so on. However, these contain additives that can be harmful to dogs. There are some fortifications done to the paint to serve a dual purpose and those should be avoided actively. These paints need not be inhaled or ingested to cause a bad reaction. Sometimes, even constant contact with the skin of the pet or can cause allergies and rashes.

If you are making a home safe for you and your pet, these are some things you can follow.
