The Step-by-Step Guide to Fixing a Run Flat Tyre on your Car

A car utilises run-flat tyres for a few specialised vehicles such as armoured vehicles or high-performance cars. A standard tyre comprises rubber and steel (which is cast out of steel moulds). Run flat consist of a rubber and kevlar band that encompasses the wheel to ensure that it doesn’t get punctured by anything sharp like nails or glass pieces. They are designed this way to resist damage even if you drive over something sharp and get stuck in the middle of nowhere. But if you want to use this type of 4×4 Tyres London on your regular car, here’s what you need to do:

* First and foremost, look at the sidewall of your current tyre; whether it says “RFT” or not. You cannot use regular tyres on that car if it does since its wheel is manufactured for RFT tyres only.

* If it doesn’t say “RFT” then get your hands on RFT tyres. This can be easily achieved by locating a BMW service centre in your area and asking them to give you the 4×4 Tyres of the same size of the wheel on which they are currently using run-flats so that you can replace them with regular rubber tyres instead. There’s no stopping unless you do this unless of course if there’s any damage to the wheel itself or wheel rim (which is not very common). You don’t need new wheels or wheel rims for this; just the tyres will suffice fine.

* Since run-flat tyres are designed for special applications, they can be a bit more expensive, so buy them online if you want to save some money. The catch here is that you have to fit these new run flats yourself since BMW dealerships charge an arm and a leg to remove the old ones during replacement. If you are not confident enough, take it to your nearest garage or tyre store who will do the needful within half of BMW’s charge.

Guide to tyre instalment:

* Before installing the new set on your car, be sure that everything is spick and span; well readied up and ready for use. There’s no point in installing brand-new tyres only to find out later that there’s some issue with valve stems or lug nuts.

* Double-check to ensure all the lug nuts are in place and tightened down. This is very important for your safety if you are doing it yourself or even if you are taking it to someone else who will do the job for you, then double-check everything before letting them get started. It’s better to be safe than sorry after all.

* Once you’ve installed the new set of tyres on your car, now comes the time to pump those babies up. You cannot use an ordinary air pump that pumps petrol and air; these run-flat tyres need a dedicated compressor that can handle the kevlar band inside them without damaging anything. There are chances that such compressors may not be available at every gas station so buy your portable air compressor plugged into a cigarette lighter or similar power outlet to save yourself the hassle of finding one when you need it.

By following these steps, you can successfully install run-flats on your car and make sure there’s no damage done to them or yourself for that matter. It’s a bit difficult but not impossible if you do your research well enough before trying anything crazy on your own.

Unless of course if you are not confident enough doing it by yourself, don’t try this for obvious reasons. Anyway, a little effort will go a long way in saving a lot of money if you change tyres frequently due to wear and tear. Then buying RFT aftermarket tyres might end up costing less over time and you’ll be sure to avoid punctures and blown tyres as well.

A car’s suspension is designed for regular tyres and if you install RFT on it, the suspension will have to deal with additional weight for which it was not originally designed. The extra load can cause springs or struts to wear out prematurely so avoid doing anything crazy like this unless there’s some emergency. If your car uses run flats from the factory, don’t worry about this much since they were made to work under such conditions but it’s better to be safe than sorry at the end of the day.

That these aftermarket run-flat tyres are manufactured for special applications therefore they may not be a perfect match in terms of size and width etcetera when compared to regular tyres. This means that if your car is lowered using adjustable suspension then chances of rubbing are pretty high. Be sure to check if there’s enough clearance between tyre and wheel well before driving the car around on RFT tyres or otherwise it can end up causing some serious damage. You can always contact Mobile Tyre Fitting London in case of emergencies.
