What Is Nance Appliance and How Do You Use It?

As dentists, we often talk about the importance of wearing night guards during the day and night. This piece of protective mouth gear is often bulky, however, which makes it inconvenient to wear during the day, but not at night. That’s where Nance Appliance comes in! Nance Appliance was designed by a dentist to allow patients to wear their night guard during the day as well, without feeling uncomfortable.

Benefits of a nance appliance

A nance appliance also helps to hold lower teeth back. The lower lingual holding arch extends up behind your lower front teeth, creating a gentle downward force that prevents your lower jaw from moving forward too much during sleep. This can be an effective treatment for preventing facial wrinkles, especially around the mouth. People who chew with their mouths open or use ill-fitting dentures at night often benefit from wearing a nance appliance while they sleep. A nance can also help some people with TMJ pain by holding their jaw in alignment during sleep.

Types of nance appliances

There are two types of nance appliances. The first is an open appliance, which means that it is visible when you smile. The second type is a closed appliance, which means that it isn’t visible when you smile. Open appliances are often referred to as partial nance or saliva guard nances. Closed appliances are also known as full nances. An oral surgeon will choose an open or closed appliance based on his evaluation of your particular situation. Usually a full nance is used only after all teeth have been extracted but there can be exceptions to every rule!

Using the nance appliance

The lower lingual holding arch of a nance appliance, as its name implies, is made up of two parts; one that holds up your lower teeth, and another on top to push them forward. The appliance will remain in place by creating suction between your lips and gums. You may have heard about orthodontic retainers – which some people wear after braces have been removed or even instead of having braces put on in the first place – but unlike a retainer, which many people don’t end up wearing at all after removing their braces, a nance is almost always worn even when you think your mouth has straightened out enough to not need it anymore.

Cleaning the nance appliance

The lower lingual holding arch on a nance appliance is relatively difficult to clean. The hook portion of it can trap food particles and plaque that accumulates underneath. This can be dangerous for patients. ASs they could swallow food debris that gets caught in between their teeth or around their gums. To prevent any complications while wearing a nance appliance, it’s important to regularly brush your teeth with a small brush or even use floss if you don’t have another brushing device handy. Remember to be careful when cleaning since you might damage your braces if you’re not careful about how much pressure you apply during cleaning.
