Everything About Java Architecture & Components for Beginners in 2022

java-architecture

To be a Java developer and build unique, scalable applications, you must know every aspect of this programming language. One of the most important aspects of Java is architecture. Another technical components in this regard is to know the components of JVM. So, we’ll cover both of Java architecture and other these critical topics in this blog post.

Let’s get started:

  1. Java Architecture

Java involves two processes, compilation, and interpretation. The Java Compiler simply converts the code available in Java into byte codes. The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) converts the byte codes into machine code which the machine directly executes.

We can complete this process in the following steps:

  • Source code goes to the Java Compiler
  • Next, Java Compiler converts it into byte codes
  • Next, byte codes go to the JVM
  • At last, it goes to the OS

This is the basic Java architecture, we can take a look at its different components:

1.1 JVM (Java Virtual Machine)

The creators of Java were focused on its being a WORA (Write Once Run Anywhere). This applications can be executed on any platform, but the feature that gives Java this great quality is JVM. The JVM offers the environment to run Java code. It interprets the bytecode and converts that into machine code to ensure machine could run the Java program.

JVM loads verify and run the code. It also offers the runtime environment to the code thus it could run in the machine.

1.2 JRE (Java Runtime Environment)

The JRE creates a runtime environment where all the Java programs can be executed. It takes the Java code and combines the same with the needed libraries. The JRE also supports the JVM for its execution. The Java Runtime Environment has all the necessary software and libraries to run the programs.

1.3 JDK (Java Development Kit)

You’d use the JDK to build Java apps and programs. It is a software development environment and includes multiple development tools comprising the JRE, a compiler, an interpreter, a documentation generator, and an archiver with others.

  1. Components of JVM

Once you’re familiar with the Java architecture let’s have a look at the components of JVM so we can better understand. As the JVM performs one of the most important tasks for Java, it has several parts for that purpose.

We’ll discuss them in detail:

ClassLoader

ClassLoader is a subsystem of the JVM used to loads class files. It’s an important component of the architecture as it loads the program so other tasks can work. It also links and initializes the class files. We can further divide its working into different sections:

Loading

This component simply loads the classes. It has the BootStrap ClassLoader to load classes belonging to the bootstrap classpath. The presence of Extension ClassLoader loads classes present inside the ext folder, and the Application ClassLoader loads path described Environment Variable and similar files.

Linking

Here, the subsystem has to verify if the bytecode is correct or not. If the bytecode isn’t appropriate, it will display verification error. The linking section allocates all static variables memory and set the default values. It also replaces the symbolic references of memory with real ones.
