Many fantastic road trips are available if you’re a Vancouverite looking to escape the city or a tourist hoping to see some of British Columbia’s stunning scenery.
Situated in the southwest of Canada, Vancouver offers easy access to some of the nation’s most beautiful islands and scenic drives through deep mountain valleys to further explore the rest of the country. Canada’s Bowen Island
Only a few cities can claim a park with a view of the Lions Gate Bridge, like Vancouver’s Stanley Park. Just over an hour from Vancouver, Bowen Island is one of the nearest major islands to those who wish to get away from it a bit more.
Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay is around a 30-minute drive, depending on traffic. To go to Bowen Island, you’ll need to board a boat, which will take you there in 20 minutes or so.
You may either drive your vehicle aboard the ship or stroll onto it. You’ll save $30 by renting a car instead of public transportation.
Even though traveling to Vancouver Island is all about experiencing the outdoors and going on hikes, it’s just about nine kilometers from the ferry dock to Bowen Bay on the other side of the island and another 11 kilometers to Seymour Landing.
It is possible to trek up to two vantage points on Vancouver Island: Dorman Point in Critten Park near the ferry terminal and Mount Gardner in the center of the island. Depending on where you start, the hike up Mount Gardner may take several hours, so plan accordingly. May reach Squamish by taking Highway 99 north and following Howe Sound until you get to the city of Squamish at the mouth of the Squamish River. On their list of must-see road trip locations, Highway 99 links Vancouver to several of them, including Whistler, but the Trans-Canada Highway is the fastest route for sites beyond Pavilion.
Once you arrive, the outdoors is the primary draw, with a wide range of activities available year-round, regardless of the season. Some of the activities are hiking, mountain biking, dirt biking, horseback riding, and rock climbing. The Squamish Spit in the River Squamish’s estuary is ideal for water activities, including kayaking, kiteboarding, windsurfing, and swimming.
The town of Pemberton, British Columbia
To the north of Vancouver, amid the Coast Mountains, lies the tranquil community of Pemberton. With its year-round snow-capped peaks, Pemberton is the perfect place to decompress and reconnect with your younger self.
Pemberton is on their list of day trips, but you are welcome to stay for the weekend or even longer if you have leisure time. If you’re looking for an escape from the commotion of Vancouver, this is the place for you.
Many of the town’s structures date back to the 19th century, making it a charming place to visit. There are several streams in and around Pemberton, which contributes to the town’s picture-perfect appearance.
First Nations people had lived in the area for thousands of years before. Mount Currie, home to the Mount Currie Indian Reserve, is the next town down the valley. The pinnacle of the mountain can be from every point in the valley; Lil’wat regards it as a sacred place.
Vancouver, British Columbia
The Golden Ears Provincial Park may be on each side of Alouette Lake. It’s a favourite weekend retreat for Vancouverites since it’s just an hour’s drive away.
For a one-day trip, arrive early to ensure that parking is available. The most popular weekends might sell out quickly, so reserve in advance if you want to camp.
It’s a great place to go if you’re looking for something different from the usual hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking options. Families are welcome, and plenty of activities keep children occupied.
To Hope and the Fraser Valley via Highway 7
Since this is British Columbia, you may notice a theme: road journeys out of Vancouver always feature the outdoors, and this drive up Fraser Valley to hope is no exception.
Do not use Highway 1 south of Fraser River to get to Hope since there is a shorter route. Pick the picturesque Lougheed Highway, or Scenic 7, which travels along the north bank and is also known as Scenic 7.
When driving from Maple Ridge, you may stop at the picturesque villages of Mission and Maple Ridge or in Harrison Hot Springs and Agassiz if you’d want to take a break. Even though I’m from the original Kent in the U.K., this one has a far more picturesque mountain background!
Whistler, British Columbia
Whistler is well-known as one of North America’s top ski resorts. Whistler Blackcomb is a famous ski resort in the region, neighboring Canada and the U.S.
Between the two slopes of Whistler and Blackcomb stands one of the world’s most impressive gondola lifts, at 436 meters high and with a span of nearly 3 kilometers.
It was purchased by Vail Resorts, which also owns Heavenly, Beaver Creek, and Vail in the Rocky Mountains, in 2016. Consequently, costs have gone up, and the resort may seem more commercial than it once was, but the stunning surroundings and expansive ski area remain reasons to visit.
From Hope to Lytton, the Fraser Canyon
Road trips between Vancouver and Hope are viable options for those on time. The Fraser Canyon, which stretches 84 kilometers from Hope to Lytton, is an excellent option to extend your Air tickets from India to Canada travel further.
Highway 1 used to be the major road from Vancouver to the interior of British Columbia, and it takes you through the canyon for 109 kilometers. The Coquihalla River in the next valley to the east now carries most of the traffic, making this picturesque route much less congested.
The road will begin to twist and bend as the canyon narrows as you ascend. Make sure to pause and take the scenery and villages through the tunnels. Iron railway bridges and an unusual aerial ferry may at Boston Bar, which is now defunct.
